Arturia MINIFREAK VOCODER 37-Key Hybrid Synthesizer

The Arturia MiniFreak Vocoder is a 37-key hybrid synthesizer designed for players and producers who want hands-on sound creation with integrated vocal processing. Its white Vocoder Edition pairs the MiniFreak’s dual-engine architecture with a 16-band vocoder and included gooseneck microphone. It provides a compact keyboard-based instrument for building synth parts, processing external sound, and creating sequenced electronic textures without relying exclusively on software instruments.

The six-voice design combines two digital sound engines with polyphonic analog filters and VCAs. This structure supports layered oscillator sounds, digital synthesis methods, resonant filter shaping, and Engine 2 processing of Engine 1. It is suited to musicians seeking a single instrument for conventional synth tones as well as more experimental timbres.

The integrated vocoder can use a microphone or other external source, while Self Vocoder processing can apply the effect to internal synth sounds. Four selectable vocoder characters—Clean, Vintage, Narrow, and Gated—offer different tonal responses for voice-like effects and spectral sound design. The included microphone makes the vocal-input workflow available immediately after setup.

A velocity-sensitive 37-note slim-key keybed with aftertouch gives performers direct control over expressive parts. Two touch strips, an OLED display, a seven-source modulation matrix, custom LFO curves, and dedicated sequencing controls keep core sound-shaping functions accessible from the front panel. The 64-step sequencer also supports four lanes of automated modulation for evolving patterns.

MiniFreak Vocoder fits into desktop studios, live keyboard rigs, and hybrid hardware/software workflows. Balanced stereo outputs connect to a mixer, audio interface, or powered speakers, while MIDI, USB, sustain, audio input, and analog clock connections support integration with other instruments. MiniFreak V software extends the same architecture to compatible computer-based production environments.

Design & Installation

The MiniFreak Vocoder uses a compact white-and-orange keyboard chassis with dedicated synthesis controls, an OLED display, two performance touch strips, and a 37-note slim-key layout. Arturia specifies a 578 x 55 x 231 mm footprint and a 3.28 kg weight, making it practical for desktop placement and portable keyboard rigs. A 30 cm gooseneck microphone and stand are included with this edition.

Connect the balanced stereo outputs to line-level inputs on an audio interface, mixer, or powered monitor system, and use the dedicated headphone output for personal monitoring. The rear panel also provides audio input, sustain-pedal input, MIDI In/Out/Thru, USB, and analog clock input/output connections. Power the instrument with the included universal 12V, 1A power supply, then connect USB when using MiniFreak V, managing presets, or exchanging MIDI with a computer.
