The Arturia MiniFreak is a 37-key hybrid synthesizer built for musicians who want hands-on sound design in a compact keyboard format. Its six-voice architecture combines digital oscillator engines with analog filtering, allowing one instrument to cover melodic parts, basses, pads, textures, percussion, and experimental effects. It is suited to producers, keyboard players, electronic performers, and sound designers who want a hardware instrument that can also integrate with a computer-based setup.

Two digital sound engines operate within each voice, and Engine 2 can process Engine 1 for layered or transformed tones. The engine selection covers conventional and more unconventional synthesis approaches, including virtual analog, FM, wavetable, granular, sample-based, physical-modeling-style, and audio-input processing modes. This combination gives MiniFreak a broad tonal range, from direct synth sounds to evolving and more abstract textures.

MiniFreak uses polyphonic analog state-variable filters and VCAs after its digital sound-generation stage. The resonant filters offer low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes, with self-oscillation available for additional tone shaping. Per-voice envelopes, cycling envelopes, and LFOs provide detailed movement without requiring external modulation hardware.

Performance tools are built into the instrument for composing and playing without a separate sequencer. The 64-step sequencer supports four automation lanes, while the arpeggiator includes functions such as ratcheting and octave randomization. Velocity-sensitive slim keys with aftertouch, two touch strips, macro controls, Chord mode, and Scale mode support expressive live use.

For studio integration, MiniFreak provides balanced stereo outputs, headphone output, audio input, USB, 5-pin MIDI, sustain-pedal input, and analog clock connections. It also includes access to MiniFreak V for registered users, enabling compatible hardware and software workflows with shared preset management. This makes it practical as a standalone instrument, a MIDI-equipped sound module, or a synth voice within a DAW-based production system.

Its layout places oscillator, filter, modulation, effects, sequencing, and performance controls within reach for direct editing. The unit measures 22.76 x 9.09 x 2.17 inches and weighs 6.48 pounds.

Connect the included 12V/1A universal power supply, then route the balanced left and right outputs to a mixer, audio interface, powered monitors, or other line-level destination. USB can be used for computer connection, firmware updates, preset management, and MiniFreak V integration, while 5-pin MIDI and analog clock connections support external hardware. A sustain pedal may be connected with a 1/4-inch TS cable, and the audio input can bring an external source into the synth architecture.
