The Arturia MicroFreak is a compact hybrid hardware synthesizer built for musicians who want a broad range of electronic sounds without a large keyboard workstation. Its digital oscillator section works with an analog state-variable filter, giving users a practical way to combine detailed digital textures with analog filtering. It is well suited to desktop studios, live electronic rigs, and modular-oriented setups.
MicroFreak supports 21 digital oscillator modes, including wavetable, virtual analog, physical-modeling, sample, granular, Mutable Instruments-derived, Noise Engineering-derived, and vocoder-based sound generation. This range lets it move from straightforward basses and leads to percussive tones, evolving textures, vocal effects, and experimental sequences. Up to four voices are available in paraphonic operation, while mono and unison modes support more focused parts.
The 25-key capacitive PCB keybed is designed for fast touch response and supports polyphonic aftertouch. Each note can provide its own expressive pressure data, which can be routed internally or sent to compatible external gear. A capacitive touch strip adds another hands-on performance control.
Its sequencing tools help turn sound ideas into repeatable patterns. The 64-step sequencer stores two patterns per preset and supports four automation tracks, while Spice and Dice functions introduce controlled note and gate variation. A built-in arpeggiator offers Up, Order, Random, and Pattern modes for fast rhythmic parts.
MicroFreak can serve as a standalone sound source or as a control center within a larger setup. It provides USB, MIDI, clock, and CV/Gate/Pressure connections for computer, MIDI, and modular workflows. The balanced-capable main output and headphone connection make it simple to route into monitors, mixers, audio interfaces, or headphones.
Key Features
- 21 Digital Oscillator Modes: Covers wavetable, sample, granular, physical-modeling, vocoder, and other synthesis approaches.
- Analog State-Variable Filter: Shapes the digital oscillator with resonant low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filtering.
- 25-Key Capacitive Keybed: Provides a compact touch surface with per-key polyphonic aftertouch response.
- Four-Voice Paraphony: Enables chords and layered note patterns while sharing the analog filter stage.
- 64-Step Sequencer: Records two patterns and four automation tracks within each preset.
- CV, MIDI, USB, And Clock: Connects with DAWs, MIDI hardware, and compatible modular equipment.
Design & Installation
MicroFreak uses a compact desktop format with a flat capacitive PCB key surface rather than conventional moving keys. Its front panel combines dedicated oscillator, filter, modulation, sequencing, and performance controls with an OLED display for parameter feedback. The touch-key design keeps the instrument shallow and portable while supporting pressure-based expression.
Place the unit on a stable desktop, keyboard stand shelf, or performance surface with access to its rear-panel connections. Connect the 1/4-inch main output to a mixer, interface, or powered monitor system, or use the 3.5 mm headphone output for personal monitoring; power is available from the supplied universal PSU or USB. For MIDI hardware, use the included 3.5 mm TRS-to-5-pin DIN adapters, and use the configurable CV, Gate, and Pressure outputs with compatible modular or voltage-controlled instruments.

Can the MICROFREAK connect to a computer or DAW?
Yes. It has a USB Type-B connection and operates as a USB MIDI class-compliant device. It can send and receive MIDI data over USB.
Can it control Eurorack or other modular synthesizers?
Yes. MicroFreak provides separate CV Pitch, Gate, and Pressure outputs. Pitch format, gate format, and pressure range can be configured for compatible external equipment.
Does it have a conventional piano-style keyboard?
No. It uses a 25-key flat capacitive PCB keybed with no moving keys. The keybed supports polyphonic aftertouch.
What is included with the standard MicroFreak?
The box includes the MicroFreak unit, a universal power supply, a registration card, and two MIDI port adapters. The standard package listing does not include the gooseneck microphone supplied with the separate Vocoder Edition.
Can I use headphones and external speakers?
Yes. It has a 3.5 mm headphone output and a 6.35 mm main audio output. The main output accepts TS or balanced TRS connections.
Can I load my own samples?
Yes, with firmware 5.0 features and Arturia MIDI Control Center. Imported samples are stored as 16-bit, 32 kHz mono files, with audio beyond 24 seconds truncated.
