The Arturia KeyStep 37 mk2 is a compact 37-key MIDI controller and polyphonic hardware sequencer for musicians working with software instruments, MIDI hardware, and CV-equipped modular gear. It provides a practical central keyboard for writing, recording, and performing without requiring a full-size controller. USB-C MIDI, MIDI DIN, analog sync, and CV/Gate connections let it serve as a bridge between modern computer-based production and hands-on electronic instruments.

Its velocity- and aftertouch-sensitive Slimkey keyboard offers three octaves of playable range while keeping the unit desktop-friendly. Capacitive pitch-bend and modulation strips add expressive control without mechanical wheels, while per-key RGB LEDs provide visual feedback for notes, patterns, banks, and scale functions. The keyboard can also be transposed up or down by as much as three octaves.

For composing, the onboard polyphonic step sequencer stores 64 patterns across four banks. Each pattern supports up to 64 steps and up to eight notes per step, making it suitable for chord progressions as well as melodic sequences. Step recording, real-time recording, overdub, pattern chaining, quantization, automation recording, and undo tools support quick idea development.

The 16-mode arpeggiator, Chord mode, Scale mode, and Mutate tools provide additional ways to shape phrases during performance. Chord mode can generate preset or user-defined voicings, while Scale mode can constrain played notes to selected scales. Four mode-aware encoders, an OLED display, and a clickable encoder provide direct access to sequence, arpeggiator, chord, mutate, MIDI CC, and CV settings.

KeyStep 37 mk2 is designed to integrate into hybrid setups rather than act as a sound source on its own. It can control DAW instruments through class-compliant USB-C MIDI, external synths through MIDI DIN, and analog or modular devices through Pitch, Gate, Mod 1, and Mod 2 outputs. Its configurable CV formats, pedal input, sync I/O, and MIDI Thru support make it a flexible choice for expanding a keyboard, sequencer, or modular workflow.

Design & Installation

The KeyStep 37 mk2 uses a compact desktop-oriented layout with a 37-note Slimkey keyboard, OLED display, clickable encoder, four control encoders, capacitive touch strips, and RGB note feedback. Arturia does not specify the enclosure material composition, but the controller measures 21.54 x 5.83 x 2.28 inches and weighs 2.40 pounds. A Kensington lock slot and dedicated power switch are included for practical studio and performance use.

Connect the included USB-A to USB-C cable to a computer, compatible tablet, or suitable USB power source for power and USB MIDI. Use standard MIDI DIN cables for external MIDI instruments, 3.5 mm TRS cables for analog sync, and compatible patch cables for Pitch, Gate, Mod 1, and Mod 2 connections. A separately purchased TRS sustain or expression pedal can be connected to the pedal input; analog and modular users should confirm voltage and trigger-format compatibility before patching.
